Signs of the Times
From an article by "Signet" in The Sign London, England
Where ... is heaven? To the world of Bible times, and for very many centuries afterwards, heaven was "above," hell was "beneath," and earth was somewhere in between. As every Christian knows, the language of his faith abounds in instances of this way of thinking. "God looks down" upon mankind: men "look up" to God.
Such picture language—for that is what it is—is very natural, being an attempt to put into the language of space and time great concepts about God and man which are beyond space and time. The danger is that, if they are taken too literally, some new scientific discovery may come along which may seem to undermine their whole basis.
