In the Preface of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy gives us a sentence of few words, but it is a clarion call to mankind (p. vii): "The time for thinkers has come."

Christian Science came to me at a time of deep despair, intense physical suffering, and enslavement to many false gods. In order to stand upright and relieve an inoperable back condition, I was wearing a specially made corset with steel stays. I had to wear a steel brace in each shoe to walk, was suffering from a heart condition, had alarmingly low blood pressure, and was anemic.

In addition, I smoked two packages of cigarettes a day and indulged in social drinking. I prayed that God would let me know the truth that would make me free and that I might obey His will, not mine.
