GOOD TIDINGS VERSUS TALEBEARING

One of the admonitions which Moses was instructed to give to the children of Israel is stated in Leviticus as follows (19:16): "Thou shah not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people." What needless strife has been known to be stirred up simply through talebearing!

In homely parable we are given in Proverbs a remedy for such strife (26:20, 21): "Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife."

Not infrequently one may be tempted to relate an incident or an overheard remark or to pass personal judgment along to another. Sometimes it is done to give the speaker an inner feeling of importance. Occasionally it is done to arouse currents of suspicion or distrust. Seldom is it necessary.
