BLOSSOMING AS THE ROSE

It had been an unusually early and cold winter for our part of the country, and dire predictions were made as to resultant heavy loss of flowering shrubs, particularly of rosebushes. The writer, who for many years has enjoyed a rose garden and the blessing of sharing its blooms with others, turned to the Bible and to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for the solution of the problem.

She knew that the Bible urges us to put our faith in the power of God. Through previous experiences she had learned that the presence of natural beauty does not induce fear of loss, but on the contrary uplifts thought in praise to the creator and His creation. She recalled with gratitude that our Leader loved flowers and quite often refers to them in her writings.

Once, when speaking of the flowers at an Easter service, Mrs. Eddy said (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 179): "These flowers are floral apostles. God does all this through His followers; and He made every flower in Mind before it sprang from the earth: yet we look into matter and the earth to give us these smiles of God!"
