Activities for the Armed Services
New York
Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services continually receives letters of appreciation of the work of Christian Science Chaplains, Ministers, and Representatives. Many letters express gratitude for healings experienced by the writers while in the Armed Forces and give interesting accounts of the activities of our field workers. The following letter from a soldier provides such a report on the work of a Christian Science Representative in the Armed Services:
"Before entering the United States Army, I thought that Christian Science help would not be obtainable while I was in uniform. Thanks to your department of The Mother Church this has not proved to be the case.
"I have just been transferred from an installation in New York State, where the Christian Science Representative carries on a very helpful program. Through the kindly consideration of the Chaplains at this installation, the Representative was provided a study room where we who are students of Christian Science may read the Bible, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy, and some of her other writings. Also available in the room are current Christian Science periodicals, including the Christian Science Quarterly. The latter we may receive free of charge.
"I am most grateful for these provisions for Christian Scientists in the Armed Forces. Another matter for which I wish to express thanks is the fact that your department supplies those sincerely interested with free Service Edition sets of the Bible and Science and Health. All who receive these gift sets greatly appreciate them.
"The Representative conducts midweek testimony meetings and arranges transportation for those of us who desire to attend the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings at a neighboring Christian Science church. He even takes us to Christian Science lectures at this church and other churches in nearby communities. Such help is wonderful.
"If in any way I can assist the fine work of Armed Services Activities, I should be very happy to do so. I have recently applied for membership in The Mother Church."

A soldier was sent to an Army hospital for observation. After examining the serviceman, a specialist diagnosed the condition as a serious muscular difficulty. In addition, the soldier was suffering from very painful headaches.
While in the hospital, he explained to the doctors that he Has studying Christian Science and asked if he might call a Christian Science Chaplain for help. The doctors very kindly granted him permission to return to his barracks and to be placed in quarters for a period of three days so that he might work out his problems through Christian Science. However, if not sufficiently recovered to do duty at the end of this time, he was to report to the hospital for medical and surgical aid, which were considered necessary.
Under Christian Science treatment the man's headaches disappeared by the end of the first day. The morning of the third day, he reported to the hospital and, after an examination, was pronounced normal. In addition, when he was returned to full duty, he received a new assignment for which he was well suited and which was what he wanted.

Christian Scientists telephone, telegraph, and write Armed Services Activities because they want us to assist relatives or friends in the Armed Forces or obtain information concerning them. Through our Chaplains, Ministers, and Representatives we are able to give assistance and to obtain reports in such cases. Usually we do not receive these calls for help unless some emergency or serious situation has arisen.
We also get in touch with service personnel who are suffering from loneliness and maladjustment to military life and who have neglected to write home. The fruitage from all these contacts is great and brings blessings to many.
Occasionally we have been able to help those who have become involved with military or civilian law and who have needed the immediate assistance of a Chaplain, Minister, or Representative. In many such cases parents or relatives have communicated with us and sought our help. Invariably those who break military or civilian law are ones who have not known of Christian Science or if they have known of it, have not practiced its teachings.
Our field workers have borne witness to the beneficial operation of divine law. Through these experiences people have become interested in Christian Science for the first time; others have been awakened to the truth they have known but have forgotten or neglected.
Grateful parents and relatives have written our department many letters of appreciation for the wise, loving, and healing ways in which our Chaplains, Ministers, and Representatives have cared for such cases. Besides expressing thanks for the prompt and efficient response they have received to their requests for help, relatives have been very grateful for the healing and regeneration that have resulted.
