My parents were both students...
My parents were both students of Christian Science, and I have never known any other religion. However, the first healing which was significant to me occurred when I was ten years old. I was sent home from school with symptoms of a contagious disease. In accord with regulations, the Board of Health was notified, and after I had received an examination, our home was quarantined for scarlet fever.
A Christian Science practitioner was called and worked lovingly. Although the healing was not immediate, it was complete, with no long period of convalescence or other aftereffects prophesied by the health officials. We were living in quite small quarters at the time, but the other members of the family were beautifully protected and manifested no symptoms of the disease.
I have always been grateful that as I matured, smoking and social drinking presented no temptation to me. My husband and I have relied entirely on the teachings of Christian Science in rearing our four children. They are enrolled in the Sunday School and have had many proofs of God's tender care for His children. Our family has experienced healings of so-called children's diseases and of effects of accidents. Unhappy relationships, grief, and lack of employment have likewise been overcome.
At one time our youngest boy, then two years old, cut his foot severely with an ax. One who was present voiced the opinion that it would be wise to have stitches taken to close the wound. Taking the child in my arms, I bandaged the foot so that the wound was not visible. Then he and I repeated and talked about the seven synonyms for God: Love, Truth, Life, Mind, Principle, Soul, and Spirit. After approximately twenty minutes the child removed the bandage, and we saw that the wound had closed almost entirely. A few minutes later he was outdoors playing with the other children.
For the Sunday School, the periodicals, membership in The Mother Church, and the privilege of serving in a branch church, I am extremely grateful. And also for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I am most grateful.—(Mrs.) Jeanne N. Gilbert, Greenville, Ohio.
I should like to verify my wife's testimony. After becoming a student of Christian Science, I lost all desire for tobacco. We have experienced many beautiful healings, some with the loving help of a practitioner and some as a result of our own understanding. I too am most grateful for membership in The Mother Church and for the opportunity to serve in a branch church.—James D. Gilbert.
