For twenty years the affliction of arthritis caused me agonizing pain. I was sent to different parts of the country in search of a cure. Major surgery was performed four times in a period of ten years. Finally when everything had been done for me that materia medica could do, I was told that I would never be cured.

At this time my husband was lame and suffering from a leg injury sustained years back. We had no money, no work, and everything seemed to be going wrong in our little home. We were like two lost children, frightened and desperate, and one night we both sat down and cried.

I called out to God to help us, and suddenly my husband said, "Let's go to church." Now neither of us had ever had any special kind of religion, but six months prior to this night a friend who knew us slightly and who sensed our plight had asked me to read a book entitled Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. I read only the chapter on Prayer, but I was so comforted and uplifted that I expressed the desire to go to church. When my husband scoffed at this thought, I never mentioned it again.
