I should like to relate how I...

I should like to relate how I proved that what appeared to be major disasters were but the start of a series of blessings.

During the bombing of London in 1940, I tried to realize that man's dwelling is in the consciousness of God. Tired of restless nights in the room prepared as a shelter, we were all sleeping in our beds. Early one morning, an air raid occurred, and the house received a direct hit. There were eight Christian Scientists in the house, and none of the eight suffered more than superficial cuts. The whole incident was regarded locally as a miracle.

My first problems were accommodation and storage space. My brother took us all in; a day later his house would have been full of other refugees. Most Londoners were sending their furniture to the West for storage, but I was given free space locally in an unexpected place. Later, a suitable unfurnished house was rented near some of our relations and in a safer district than our former home.
