"HEAR, O ISRAEL"

"I had been deaf from childhood. ... I met a friend who had been cured in Christian Science, and she said, "Try Christian Science.'" These are the words of a testifier recorded on pages 652 and 653 of the chapter entitled "Fruitage" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The testifier goes on to say, "I got a copy of Science and Health and in three weeks I was entirely cured."

Such acknowledgments of freedom are not unusual today as the truths of Christian Science are correctly applied to the problem of imperfect hearing. Those who seek relief from any problem through Christian Science treatment must acknowledge that this Science is not merely an agency to give relief to a suffering or defective body. It is distinctly a religion, and its successful healing practice is premised upon a comprehension of its teachings and a willing obedience to them.

The seeker for healing must gain a spiritual concept of this statement in Proverbs (20:12): "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." At the outset it must be clearly understood that since God is Spirit and can create only that which is spiritual and consistent with His nature, He does not make material organs of either hearing or seeing. "The hearing ear" that God "hath made" is spiritual sense, a spiritual faculty or capacity. He who really hears, understands; and he who spiritually understands, really hears.
