One evening, about dinnertime,...

One evening, about dinnertime, our youngest son came home in a very disheveled state, holding his arm in a peculiar manner. I declared to myself, "All is well." At the same time I saw through the kitchen window that an older friend was carrying our son's bicycle into the yard. The front wheel was badly crushed.

Our son told me he had been knocked down by a car. The driver had wanted to take him to a hospital, but he had refused to go, declaring several times that he was all right and wanted to go home. The man then got into his car and drove away.

The boy went to lie down in the living room while I went on with dinner preparations, but I felt myself getting more and more indignant at this unknown person, who had not even brought the youngster home. Before long I felt he was practically a hit–and–run driver.
