THE NEW BIRTH

Before we learn of Christian Science, Jesus' words, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3), may seem to be as perplexing to us as they were to Nicodemus.
We live as well as we can, according to our concept of good, in a world which seems to be largely material. We sometimes struggle with difficulties and illnesses, with incongruities, injustices, and various impracticable views. But when we come to study Christian Science, we cease believing in the power and reality of matter and no longer use it to base our actions and hopes.
As, little by little, matter loses for us its apparent substantiality, we emerge as from a fog. We begin to put off the old man and to be born again. Great joy is ours, and we echo words from Hymn No. 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal:
