Before coming into Christian Science...
Before coming into Christian Science I had been under the care of doctors for years. I had taken many kinds of medicines and submitted to various forms of treatment for a condition of the lungs. I felt like the woman referred to in the Bible who "had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse" (Mark 5:26). When the best London specialists could do no more for me, I was discharged from the hospital with the information that I would always be afflicted with a cough.
Then I came to live with my sister, and she recommended that I try Christian Science. I did so, and as I learned to love unselfishly, the cough disappeared. Since then I have led a busy life and have not been confined to bed even for a day. Previous to my introduction to Science, I had spent five out of every seven days resting. Relatives who had last seen me as a semi-invalid were greatly impressed at the change in my condition.
I have had many proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science, but the experiences that have taught me most are those in which I have endeavored to forget myself in order to show more love for my fellow men. One summer while my sister and her family were away on holiday, I wanted to can some fruit for them. There was a fair quantity of fruit in the garden, and I felt it was right for the family to enjoy it during the winter, but I had never done any fruit canning.
