ESSENTIAL QUALITIES

Christian Science is not a theory to be read and discussed as a social pastime. It is vital truth which must be understood and lived. In her writings Mary Baker Eddy calls our attention to qualities of thought which we need to express in order to live right.

A few of these qualities are enumerated on page 272 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science. There Mrs. Eddy states: "The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek." These qualities are essential for spiritual growth.

The quality of honesty involves much more than paying our debts humanly. We must keep faith with the higher understanding of Life and not be tempted to lower our standards or compromise with error. To be honest, according to the teachings of Christian Science, mankind must keep thought pure and unstained by the lying suggestion that there is life or sensation in matter.
