DWELLING IN LOVE

What is God? That God is Love provides a satisfying answer. Deity known as God may be beyond the comprehension of both eye and intellect, but known as Love, God is never outside the comprehension of the heart. Everyone is capable of loving unselfishly and, therefore, of knowing God. Christ Jesus' beloved disciple, John, said (I John 4:16), "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."

This statement deserves thoughtful consideration by those who desire a more Godlike experience. Christian Science enlightens our understanding of the disciple's words by revealing the spiritual sense of his terminology. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (pp. 319, 320), "A misplaced word changes the sense and misstates the Science of the Scriptures, as, for instance, to name Love as merely an attribute of God; but we can by special and proper capitalization speak of the love of Love, meaning by that what the beloved disciple meant in one of his epistles, when he said, 'God is love.'"

Christian Science removes any personal sense of love from God and His reflection. Love is Deity, infinite Spirit. Therefore, dwelling in Love is a spiritually devotional activity rather than a humanly emotional one. Divine Love and its reflection never become materially personal, but always remain spiritually impersonal.
