WITHSTANDING THE PRESSURE TO CONFORM
[Of Special Interest to Young People]
Divine Mind is constantly affirming that man is wholly good, that he dwells in a God-created and God-sustained universe, and that his entire experience is characterized by an abundance of good. The wise student of Christian Science listens to the voice of God, divine Mind, and is careful to admit into his thinking only the certain conviction of God's unlimited goodness and of man's full and perfect expression of that goodness. The individual who declares and understands that God governs all finds his present life experience to be a joyous, meaningful, progressive unfoldment of good.
The young Christian Scientist is challenged to take his stand on the side of God, Principle, and to resist and reject the subtle allurements which would destroy his opportunity for continued happiness and success in life. The subtlety of evil suggestion is such that unless the student watches his thinking, even as Christ Jesus admonished us to do, he may be distracted from his resolve to listen only to God for guidance and find himself conforming to the mediocre mentality of the crowd.
The Bible gives in the experience of Daniel an example of a single individual's having the courage to stand for what he knew to be right. The presidents and princes of Babylonia obtained the king's signature to a decree that anyone who prayed to a god or to a man other than the king would be cast into the lions' den. "When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, ... he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime" (Dan. 6:10). Daniel was thrown into the den of lions because of his worship; but he was not touched by the lions, for his trust in God's power kept him from harm.
