RADIO PROGRAM No. 192 - Overcoming Occupational Hazards
Speaker: In these times when workers or their families may be concerned with on-the-job safety and health measures, many are proving that an understanding of God's all-power successfully meets the challenge of occupational hazards to health and well-being. Our guest, Miss H. Gladys Swope of Downers Grove, Illinois, will tell how she was healed through prayer alone of critical conditions related to her occupation as a chemist.
Miss Swope: My interest in chemistry began in high school, and I've worked as a chemist for many years. At the present time I'm in charge of radioactive waste treatment and the Gamma irradiation facility in an atomic energy laboratory. When I took this position as chemist, I had to submit to a physical examination. Later, to my surprise, I was called in and asked if I'd been exposed to radioactive materials, or if I'd been in an accident recently. These questions were asked because the examining doctors said my hemoglobin count was dangerously below normal, and they said it was a wonder I was even alive. They asked detailed questions about my health, none of which applied to me, for I felt excellent. They strongly recommended that I see a specialist and take immediate steps to correct this condition. This whole thing was a challenge to me. I'd been brought up in Christian Science, and I was accustomed to turn to God for healings. From the time I was a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School, I'd known and proved many times that there is no power apart from God, who is divine Love, the only cause and creator.
Once before in my work as a chemist I'd been faced with the necessity to prove God's all-power. My hands and chest had been badly burned in a laboratory accident. Fear was expressed that I would die of shock or be permanently disfigured. Then as now I relied solely on Christian Science.
