When I was in the first year of...
When I was in the first year of high school, a clear relative introduced our family to Christian Science by giving us a Sentinel. My mother was the first to embrace this religion. She borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and immediately put into practice what she was learning by healing minor physical complaints in our family of four children. Mother and I had long talks concerning God, and within the year I too accepted Christian Science.
The first healing which came through my own understanding was that of the need of wearing glasses. The doctor had predicted that I would wear them the rest of my life. During study class at high school I declared to myself that God being good could see only good, and therefore I, His image and likeness, could see only good. It was a simple statement, but it was the truth; and the glasses were laid aside quickly. That was over twenty-five years ago. Since then I have done close work in hand lettering, art work, and sewing, and the healing has been permanent.
Another outstanding healing came several years later. My feet were covered with eczema, and although I had help from a practitioner, the disease did not yield. There was much error to be uncovered and destroyed in my thinking. For one thing, I resented hearing Mrs. Eddy's name read at our church services. When I was finally unable to walk and was forced to lie in bed, the practitioner told me to read "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur. Such a love for the consecrated work of our be-loved Leader flooded my consciousness as I read that I was healed. The truth of her statement, "Love is the liberator" (Science and Health, p. 225), was proved to me through this experience. During the period I was confined to bed with eczema, I was healed of scarlet fever in a single day, and there have been no aftereffects.
