THE SHEPHERD CARES

One of the most loved of all Biblical passages is the Psalm which starts with the assuring statement (23:1), "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." A frightened, confused world, weary of human responsibilities and wary of human means of coping with them, finds comfort and courage in the promise that God in His infinite love, wisdom, and power will ever care for us.

The Psalmist saw himself as belonging to the Shepherd and provided for by Him. When we relinquish our belief that we are mortals, dependent upon personal abilities for survival and success, and see that as God's children or ideas we are under His control and care, we begin to understand that it is His province to supply, sustain, place, and protect that which is necessary to His holy purpose.

If we would experience God's shepherding care, we must express lamblike qualities. In "Retrospection and Introspection" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 86): "No one can save himself without God's help, and God will help each who performs his own part. After this manner and in no other way is every man cared for and blessed." Let us prayerfully consider what we must do that we may enjoy the promised bliss of the shepherding experience.
