"THERE IS NO SENSATION IN MATTER"

[Original in French]

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 237): "A little girl, who had occasionally listened to my explanations, badly wounded her finger. She seemed not to notice it. On being questioned about it she answered ingenuously, 'There is no sensation in matter.' Bounding off with laughing eyes, she presently added, 'Mamma, my finger is not a bit sore.' "

This little girl found it quite natural to rely radically on the omnipotence of divine Love. She neither questioned nor disputed, but placed herself completely in Love's safekeeping. In this situation, which might have been distressing to her if her thought had been directed to the injury, she succeeded in completely eliminating the pain.

Each individual can also prove the powerlessness of pain according to his spiritual understanding. Mrs. Eddy makes this comment on the incident (ibid., p. 237): "It might have been months or years before her parents would have laid aside their drugs, or reached the mental height their little daughter so naturally attained."
