Some years ago I suffered from a distressing ailment which continued for several months. A specialist to whom I applied for a diagnosis asked me to have a blood test, and I did so. When I saw the specialist again, I was informed that I had diabetes and was advised to go on a prescribed diet.

Two months later the condition was still not good, and the doctor told me that I would have to have insulin treatment regularly and that I must go to the hospital at once. I could not agree to this and asked to wait another month before I made a decision.

During this month I did not have drugs or medicine. I prayed for guidance and then asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me. The practitioner very lovingly responded and encouraged me to heed these words of Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 393): "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government." She also gave me some words of a hymn to ponder (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 204): "During the battle the victory claim." I then and there made my claim for freedom. I knew that God was on the field and that all would be well.
