MAN IS UNAFRAID

Many turn to Christian Science because it teaches how to conquer fear. If one should ask, "Is it possible to be unafraid?" let him read in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, these words (p. 410): "The Apostle John says: 'There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear .... He that feareth is not made perfect in Love.' Here is a definite and inspired proclamation of Christian Science." Thus our Leader encourages us to gain the understanding of divine Love which proves the unreality of fear.

For God, Love, to be afraid is unthinkable; it is equally impossible for His likeness, man, to be afraid. Freedom from fear is divinely natural, not miraculous. Fear is often connected with the anticipation of some event. If we move that event into the present, the individual may find that his fears were greatly magnified or were utterly groundless. As he approaches the point where he is conscious only of divine reality, he finds that fear is but a phantom. Everything that is real is good. Once we enter the realm of Love, of Mind, fear vanishes effortlessly.

Christ Jesus' understanding of divine Love enabled him to rebuke the fever of Simon's mother-in-law, and it left her. When fear disappeared, the fever had nothing to support it; so it vanished. Love that excludes fear is always present in human consciousness. Spiritual love is the armor one should always wear, for it enables one to live a life free from worry and fear. One's ability to annihilate fear lies in his recognition of the fact of Love's allness and man's perfection as Love's likeness.
