HOW TO SPIRITUALIZE THOUGHT

The basic teaching of Christian Science on the subject of spiritualizing thought is that we must become as little children, that is, be willing to accept the Christ, Truth, with sincerity and strive to advance in the understanding of it. We must be ready to give up man-made theological doctrines for the revelation of Christian Science. The Apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Romans, writes (8:1, 2): "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Jesus told his disciples that if they possessed even a grain of faith and used it, they could remove mountains.

Spirituality belongs to every man, woman, and child. It is the basic quality of one's being. Spirituality is Godlikeness, without which men cannot exist. Jesus implies that spirituality is the kingdom of heaven, which is already within us. This pure essence of God is the Christ, the true selfhood of every one of us. Spirituality is the goodness of God demonstrated in the lives of Jesus and his true followers.

What are some of the steps which one can take in Christian Science to increase the evidence of spirituality in his life? Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in her book "No and Yes" (p. 12), "The essence of this Science is right thinking and right acting—leading us to see spirituality and to be spiritual, to understand and to demonstrate God." It is evident from this statement that good morals, which lead to right actions, are needed for growth in spirituality or Godlikeness. To be honest, unselfish, temperate, and kindly affectioned, in short, to obey the moral law contained in the Ten Commandments, is of utmost importance. Anyone can obey these Commandments if he is willing to do so.
