"THESE SIGNS SHALL FOLLOW"

Because of the many misconceptions in the world as to what constitutes true mental or metaphysical healing, the student of Christian Science is grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for correct teaching on what Christian demonstration is. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says (p. 34), "If Christ, Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other commemoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel, or God with us." Then, according to the teachings of Christian Science, it is not matter, but God, Christ, Truth, Life, the one Mind, intelligence, Spirit, understanding, and so on that we demonstrate.

The healing work does not consist in the manipulation of the human through hypnotism, suggestion, or willful desire. Demonstration is the making evident through an understanding of Spirit, God, of that which is already true of God and the universe, including man.

Christ Jesus himself made this specific statement regarding demonstration (Mark 16:17, 18): "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." The essential indicated here is to believe, to understand what is true. This understanding is the demonstration, and Christian Science proves that signs follow this understanding or demonstration. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 141), "In healing the sick and sinning, Jesus elaborated the fact that the healing effect followed the understanding of the divine Principle and of the Christ-spirit which governed the corporeal Jesus."
