Although I was raised in the atmosphere of a Christian Science home, it took a good deal of time before I began to realize what a great truth is available to all through this wonderful religion. It was while I was in service during the Second World War that the first real glimpse of what Christian Science means came into my consciousness.

While I was stationed at a naval air base, a severe nervous condition developed. This was accompanied by extreme fear. I called on a Christian Science Wartime Minister in the area, who took up work immediately. In the days that followed, progress was slow, because my thought was clouded with materiality, but I am grateful that during this period I was able to carry out my duties.

One day, while I was waiting for a bus on this base, the sense of nervousness and fear so engulfed me that I did not know where to turn. I could not think of any truths to hold to, and worst of all, I found myself doubting the existence of God. In this moment of desperation I remember saying aloud, "If there is a God, then I need some proof of it right now!"
