THE SUBSTANCE OF SUPPLY

It is impossible to seek substance, the manifestation of Spirit, in matter or to try to improve matter by material means. It is as absurd as seeking to explore a mirage to find material gain. The only place to seek substance is in the realm of the real creation of Spirit. Mary Baker Eddy says that spiritual substance is more solid than matter and that it is not subject to decay or discord. Its sufficiency is demonstrated daily in the lives of students of Christian Science, who can attest to God's nearness and the validity of real substance as Spirit.

Without God there would be no substance. God is All, infinite Spirit. It is revealing to note that Mrs. Eddy frequently speaks of substance in conjunction with life and intelligence. She indicates that wherever and whenever life and intelligence are manifested, right there true substance is also. An increased understanding of God brings greater intelligence into our lives and supplies us with true substance.

A young Christian Science mother experienced the blessing of true substance when she daily sought to gain a higher understanding of God. The food given her infant daughter lacked the proper nourishment. The mother diligently studied the Bible, together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. Each time she read, she maintained that she was filling her thought with good and thus was enriching her spiritual understanding. She drew inspiration from this verse in Matthew (4:4): "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.'" As a result of the joy and enlightenment she gained from her study, the child was properly nourished.
