DIVINE GUIDANCE

A word that is of great importance to the Christian Scientist is "guidance." The more Christian Science is studied and put into practice, the more it is found that we do indeed "live, and move, and have our being" in God, as the Apostle Paul said (Acts 17:28). Since we have our being in God, the one and only Mind, we know that creation is spiritual and is eternally at one with and under the government of Mind. At times divine guidance may not be clear to us, and the question may be asked, "How do we find it?" When we demonstrate God's control of His idea, we find ourselves under His present guidance.

Throughout the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy we are constantly being reminded of the opposite natures of divine Mind and the carnal, or mortal, mind. In the recognition of this distinction, it is helpful to ponder a statement by Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14): "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth." In order really to awaken from the dream of error to the fact that our real life is entirely separate from material beliefs, we find that all human outlining, self-will, and fear must be eliminated. These false traits are perhaps our greatest stumbling blocks, blinding us to the fact of man's unity with the one Mind.

A study of the Gospels will reveal how completely Christ Jesus understood divine guidance. There are many references to his entire dependence upon God, such as his words recorded by John (5:19), "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."
