Many of Them Are Maintained by Christian Science Societies
[Extracts from a report prepared for the Reading Room Division by the executive board of a Christian Science Society]
Salt Lake City, Utah
Soon after we became a branch of The Mother Church we realized that almost all of us desired to establish a Christian Science Reading Room in the fast-growing shopping center several miles southeast of downtown Salt Lake City. The membership was alerted to do specific study with reference to purpose, aim, object, intent, motive, and Reading Room. At a meeting it was decided that each one would be on the lookout for a suitable location, and the executive board got in touch with Chamber of Commerce officials and building owners in all shopping centers in the community. Over a period of a year and a half, vacancies were brought to our attention. Board members went to see each vacancy and considered each one with full confidence that when the right location was available we would all know it.
In the spring of 1954 a vacancy was available a few doors from our present Reading Room. A meeting was called, and we decided to rent it. However, when the owner was again reached we found that it had been rented to someone else, since we had made no deposit on it. Then a few months later we heard of the vacancy of our present location. The membership approved it with the understanding that someone else was in line for it ahead of us. The decision was in favor of the other lessee. Six months later, when he decided to move, his mother, who is a Christian Scientist, called to see if we would be interested. She knew we were looking for a location, and her son was obligated to get someone to take over his lease. In this way our present location, which is most suitable in all ways, came to us as a result of the demonstration of Truth.
