Humbly and gratefully I submit...

Humbly and gratefully I submit my testimony of the healing power of Christian Science and express my appreciation of all the blessings that have come to me through the study and application of this wonderful truth.

Christian Science was not unknown to me, but I thought I did not need it. I was well, happy, and successfully employed. Occasionally when I needed help it was given me by a Christian Science practitioner. I thought that I was grateful, though each time I reverted to my old way of life, sometimes using materia medica for aid.

A few years ago I was stricken with a serious case of shingles, which did not yield to materia medica. Loving friends helped me to board a plane, and I flew to a distant city to be with my sister, who is a student of Christian Science. There I realized that I could not continue to serve both "God and mammon" (Matt. 6:24), and I chose God. A practitioner was called, and for the first time in a month I slept without a sedative. I began at once to improve, and through the work of the practitioner I was completely healed. During this period the smoking habit of many years dropped away, and with it went an almost continuous cough. I am grateful for this healing, for I had many times tried to overcome smoking through will power. Soon I began to spend long hours each day studying in a Christian Science Reading Room. Much erroneous thinking was overcome, and many healings were brought about.

A testing time came when a medical friend suggested to me that I had a very noticeable enlargement of the thyroid gland which could be healed only through surgery. I was frightened, but I had taken my stand for Christian Science, and knew I could not give it up. These words came to me and were very comforting (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 261): "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

I called a practitioner, and she quieted my fear by assuring me that the only growth we need to be concerned with is our growth in Christian Science. Much time was spent in the Reading Room in study, and one day it came to me that I should have a testimony ready to give when the healing came. I wanted it to be just right; so I rehearsed it for days, expressing gratitude and affirming that I had been healed. One day I realized that the healing had come.

I am grateful beyond words to Mrs. Eddy for giving us a workable Science, which can be applied to any and all erroneous conditions. For the practitioners, the lecturers, and all who are so generous in giving of their time and thought to our great Cause, I am indeed grateful. —(Mrs.) Hortense Secor Leach, Glendale, California.
