It has been my custom for many...

It has been my custom for many years to read the Christian Science periodicals on the train to and from my work each day. Much good has come of this, and I have been helped and strengthened by the articles and testimonies. I often wondered why people waited so long to put their gratitude in writing to be shared by others. It now dawns on me that I have been receiving the blessings of Christian Science for over twenty years and have not written a testimony. I could fill many pages with accounts of the blessings and proofs of God's care experienced by me and mine.

Christian Scientists are sometimes asked, "What would you do if you had an accident that called for immediate attention?" It is far more helpful and conclusive to tell what one actually did; and I wish to relate such an experience.

One afternoon we were awaiting the arrival of guests. As it was a very cold day I remarked to my wife that it would be nice to have the fireplace roaring; so I went out and split some wood. After splitting several logs I swung with all my strength on a large piece of oak. The next thing I knew I felt a blow on my head, and everything turned black. Instinctively I declared, "God is Love," and although blood was gushing from the wound, I felt no pain and had no fear. The ax had caught in a clothesline and had swung back and hit me on the head.

I picked up a cloth and put it over the wound. Then I called to my wife to telephone a Christian Science practitioner that I had been struck with an ax and wished her to help me know my unity with God. During the next half hour many of the truths I had learned from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came to my thought to help me. However, I could not remove the cloth from my head without causing the bleeding to start again.

After a while I called the practitioner myself. She asked me if I could trust God to handle the situation, and I replied, "Yes." She reminded me that God never fails and that the Bible says He will heal us of our wounds. Before half an hour had passed, the bleeding stopped. Our guests arrived, and we proceeded to have a pleasant day.

The next day I went to my work as an inspector of electrical construction for the Navy Department. After climbing around on partly constructed buildings I stopped in and asked a nurse to change the bandage. She found it difficult to believe the incident had taken place the day before and called it a remarkable healing. Upon hearing that I had had Christian Science help she exclaimed, "That explains it!" She further remarked on other Christian Science healings that had come to her attention from time to time and asked for advice on how to learn more about this demonstrable Science.

For this and countless other proofs that God is, as the Bible says (Ps. 46:1), "a very present help in trouble," I am deeply grateful. I am also grateful for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, for Mrs. Eddy, our beloved Leader, and for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, where I have an opportunity of serving.—George A. Ludwig, Baldwin, Long Island, New York.
