Before commencing the study of...

Before commencing the study of Christian Science, I had been ill since my school days. I had taken medicines for what appeared to be stomach trouble and appendicitis, but the medicines upset my system, and I suffered a collapse. After many treatments I was told I was incurable. For years I was unable to take part in various normal activities. When Christian Science was presented to me I felt that the end was not far off, but as I endeavored to follow its teachings closely, I gradually improved. I learned that joy is spiritual and that it should be expressed regardless of circumstances.

I continued in this state, trying to be joyful, although I was far from being so. In addition, I was led to have Christian Science treatment for the illness. The healing was slow, but I am very grateful that I learned something of the nature of God. I had to work hard to change my thinking from a material to a spiritual base, but this change brought a realization of the spirituality of man and the universe.

Today I am healed, and I know that anyone who is held in bondage to suffering, no matter how long it has been or how bad it all may appear, can be healed if he will only make the effort to live according to the teachings of Christian Science to the best of his ability. The suffering will cease in proportion to his realization that man is not material but spiritual, as Mrs. Eddy tells us in "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health.
