PEACEMAKING IN POLITICS
Election time in a democracy calls for special alertness and spiritual clear-sightedness on the part of everyone who would aid in bringing the kingdom of God into human manifestation. This aid may best be accomplished through the application of Christian Science to individual thinking. All men need to accept the opportunity which is always at hand to glorify God, Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, by reflecting all that these terms define. The control of divine Mind over its manifestation, man, will be thereby exemplified and mankind blessed. Christ Jesus said (Matt. 5:9), "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Controlled by God we shall be peacemakers in politics.
As scientific Christians we do not agree with the popular mesmerism which contends that an election calls for malicious prejudice toward an opposing political candidate and what he represents. One can disagree politically without losing his spiritual dominion, gained from his understanding of the Christlike method of thinking and living. One who has been educated in Science knows better than to become stirred up to an unreasonable degree on the issues of a political campaign. Those issues are to be considered and weighed, but always in a Christian manner and with the assurance of the eventual success in human affairs of Christ, Truth. When one demonstrates the Christ, Truth, an intelligence appears which leads one divinely, but which does not influence maliciously.
"Politics" is defined in a dictionary as "the science and art of government; political science." This is the finer sense of the term. The dictionary gives another definition in part as, "political affairs, principles, or the like," and goes on to state what is generally practiced falsely in its name. It says, "In a bad sense, dishonest management to secure the success of political candidates or parties." All too often this latter meaning is what we see practiced in some religious, secular, and governmental groups. It sometimes appears that decency and fair play are forgotten, and human will is given free rein. Many people agree that this should not be, but feel helpless to do anything about it.
