MAKING PROGRESS A DAILY EXPERIENCE

Consistent progress in Christian Science is the result of gaining a clearer understanding each day of God and of the real man and of putting this understanding into practical use. There is no limit to the degree of spiritualization of thought which one can attain as long as one is patient and consistent in his daily gains.

It is clear that Mary Baker Eddy was aided in receiving the greatest spiritual illumination of modern times in just this way. As a child she felt God's presence and care, and each of her subsequent experiences, including many trials and hardships, only caused her to seek God more earnestly, rely more completely on His tender care, and so understand Him better. In her dedicatory sermon recorded in "Pulpit and Press" she states the basis for consistent spiritual progress, progress which she so fully experienced, in these words (p. 4): "You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this."

God is present with man as his source of consciousness, his source of right ideas—joyous, loving, active, grateful, radiant ideas. The realization of this relationship brings us a positive sense of unity with God. Our preservation of this sense of unity in the face of the erroneous claims of physical sense, difficult though it may sometimes seem, increases our understanding and so brings consistent daily progress.
