GOD'S OPEN REWARD

The revelation of Christian Science which has come to this age is symbolized in the purity, beauty, and grandeur of The Mother Church. One of Mary Baker Eddy's followers, James J. Rome, wrote, as recorded in Mrs. Eddy's book, "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 62): "But what of this magnificent structure? Whence did it come? To me it is the result of the love that trembled in one human heart when it whispered: 'Dear God, may I not take this precious truth and give it to my brothers and sisters?' "

Mrs. Eddy referred to the edifice of The Mother Church as "our prayer in stone" when she wrote in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 141), "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, our prayer in stone, will be the prophecy fulfilled, the monument upreared, of Christian Science." It is the open reward of our Leader's untiring, consecrated work and of her prayer that she might found a church to commemorate the words and works of Christ Jesus.

In the Sermon on the Mount our Master speaks of an open reward to those who spiritualize their concept of their religious duties. He observed that prayers were said on street corners, almsgiving was done with a fanfare of trumpets, and fasting was often done with a sad face, to impress men with a show of piety. Jesus told his followers to worship in secret and said (Matt. 6:18), "Thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."
