"In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me" (Ps. 120:1). As a result of a back injury, sustained in service in the Second World War, I was like one without hope in the world. All that could be promised was a series of operations, but their success was not guaranteed. The thought occurred to me to take my life, for I felt that I could not face a life of uselessness. I prayed earnestly for guidance.

At that time I met a woman who was a Christian Scientist. She noticed my distress and asked if I had a Bible. I replied that I did, for I had been a student of it all my life. She pointed out the spiritual meaning of some of the familiar passages and told me that I could be helped by reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The rest was up to me, for she then left the city where I resided to go to her own home.

I sought out a Reading Room and asked what one must do to learn about Christian Science. The attendant told me I could buy or borrow the textbook. I borrowed it and read it awhile that evening. As usual, I prepared narcotics before retiring, for I had been unable to sleep naturally. However, this time I fell asleep with the light still burning and the narcotics untouched. imagine my surprise and happiness when I awoke the next morning to find I had slept like the proverbial baby. Never again did I take any of the drugs, but threw them all away. Within one week I was back working at my old profession, something the doctors had previously claimed would be impossible for me to do.
