Who has not at some time or other seen the beauty of goodness and desired it? But, alas, it is by no summary method that character is attained.... Character is built up by continual prayer against bestments, and little daily victories over selfishness and pride. The daily repetition of acts of kindness and love, whether felt and appreciated or not, is the only way in which Christlikeness can be gained....

We need patient continuance in our work for the Lord [God]. It is the very hallmark of fruitful spiritual labor.... Some grow weary if the stimulus of constant outward success is not apparent. We can keep it up when we are winning and the bystanders are cheering us on. But when our backs are to the wall and the adversary presses hard we are apt to give way. A little more patient continuance would have changed defeat into victory....
