My first healing in Christian Science...

My first healing in Christian Science was that of a nervous collapse. A number of physicians had failed to cure me, although various remedies, including psychiatry, had been tried. My weight was down to about ninety pounds; I stuttered so badly that I shunned the society of any but my closest friends, and I could neither find joy nor give it. Through the prayers of a Christian Science friend I was healed. My gratitude was unbounded, and I began to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly.

That I might not remain in ignorance of the divine Principle whose healing power I sought to acknowledge, I immediately began the systematic study of the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. Through it I came to know God as our Father-Mother, who lovingly cares for His creation and who daily provides abundant blessings for those who trust Him understandingly. Proportionately as I began to demonstrate God's love, my peace, joy, and harmony increased.

A few months after I began this study, my gratitude sought practical expression in a desire to serve God through the avenues afforded by membership in The Mother Church, but I doubted my ability to give up the smoking habit—an indulgence of about twenty years. This problem, however, proved an opportunity to demonstrate the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and Health, p. 1), "Desire is prayer." Within about three or four weeks after voicing my desire to quit smoking, I suddenly realized that I had lost all craving to indulge in it. Shortly thereafter I had the privilege of becoming a member of The Mother Church and later of a branch church. This was followed by the added blessing of class instruction.
