While taking a course of study in...

While taking a course of study in London, England, and just before a companion and I were to make a bicycle trip through several European countries, I suffered a severe disorder of the circulatory system. I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help, and she reassured me with references from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, including several pages from the chapter entitled "Genesis." As I studied and pondered these references my fears subsided.

After a few days, however, I grew weaker. Had not my friend crossed the Atlantic Ocean at my invitation to cycle with me during her summer vacation, I should have called off the trip or postponed it until I was in better physical condition. Only through constant reliance on God to sustain, protect, and heal me was the trip made possible.

On our second day in Germany I suffered loss of consciousness, though of brief duration. My companion helped me to see the unreality of this condition, and on that afternoon and the days that followed I cycled fearlessly and without the slightest mishap. As our trip progressed our needs were often anticipated by someone who would show eagerness to find us a place to stay, to give us directions, to repair punctured tires, or to perform some other friendly service.
