In 1931 I took up the study of Christian Science and received a complete healing of inflammation of the bladder. That condition was one of many years' standing, during which I had had various kinds of medical treatment from well-known specialists. I received only temporary relief, however, and was often confined to my bed for days. Furthermore, I was told that certain foods and drinks would aggravate the condition, and as a result I was on a diet most of the time.

When I had just about given up all hope of ever being well again, a friend of mine told me of Christian Science and gave me a Sentinel to read. I was greatly impressed with the testimonies, although I believed my condition must be very different from those mentioned. In other words, I did not believe that Christian Science could help me. My friend assured me, however, that if I would go and talk to a Christian Science practitioner, I could be healed. This I did within a few days.

I shall always remember that interview. I told the practitioner about my fears, about the food I had been denied, and about how I suffered just the same. Then she began talking to me. She said: "You know, God is Love, and you are His beloved child. Knowing this, you may eat and drink what you like, and it will not harm you." She then gave me a silent treatment, which I did not understand at all. When she had finished, I left her office with the greatest sense of peace that I had ever known. I felt like the man in John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" who had carried a cumbersome and unnecessary load up the hill, and when he reached the cross, it all fell away, and he was free. From that day on I have been able to enjoy my food without any thought of discomfort.
