When Christian Science found...
When Christian Science found me, I was lonely, frustrated, unhappy, and a burden to my family and to my friends. In October, 1943, I had returned to college after leaving it as a complete failure several years before with a nervous breakdown. I started in again bravely enough, but by December of that year many of the old symptoms and fears of failure had returned. I was so positive of failure that I felt I could not take my examinations. Having failed twice before, I realized that the pattern had to be broken, or I could not bear to go on living. These fears and torments, together with the almost continual thought of suicide as the only escape, finally led me to attend a Christian Science service. The next day I visited a practitioner.
This visit stands out like a beacon light in my experience. The practitioner assured me that the responsibility for success or failure did not rest with me, but with God, and since God knows nothing of failure, I could not fail. Suddenly, I felt as though a great burden had been lifted from my shoulders.
Several passages were given to me for study, among which was the following (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 128): "The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man. From this it follows that business men and cultured scholars have found that Christian Science enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity. The human mind, imbued with this spiritual understanding, becomes more elastic, is capable of greater endurance, escapes somewhat from itself, and requires less repose."
