RADIO PROGRAM No. 91 - Transformation of Thought Brings Healing

On this program Walter R. Bullock of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, told of his own experience, as follows:

My condition certainly seemed hopeless. In fact, I was in the hospital for a special diagnosis. At the end of many tests and about thirty-five X rays, several specialists agreed nothing more could be done for me. My condition was called cirrhosis of the liver, and I was given only sixty days to live. The doctors and hospital staff were very kind and thoughtful and promised some temporary relief by tapping.

I told a friend about this verdict one day, and he suggested I try Christian Science and mentioned his own healing of hernia. Up to that time I had not been interested in any one religion, but I was encouraged by hearing that many others had been healed. I found further hope as I read the Christian Science periodicals he left for me.

Much to the surprise of the hospital staff, I had the fourth tapping and still lived. As ten doctors still agreed there was no hope for me, I asked to be taken home. I got a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I was told my healing would be found through this book. I read it as quickly as I could, anxious of course to be healed, but I got nothing out of it. Later I realized this book needs to be studied, not just read.

I grew more hopeful as I learned more about God's power. My condition did not become any worse, but I felt I still needed the relief of the tappings because I felt I was too materially-minded to understand divine Truth. But little by little, through my own regular study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings and the patient explanations of a Christian Scientist whom I knew, I felt I could turn wholeheartedly to God and allow His law to operate.

Finally the truth of all I was learning dawned on me with such force that I saw I must rely on God completely. I thanked the doctor and dismissed him when he finished the fifty-fourth tapping. A period of pain and distress followed. Then one night, lying in bed, I was thinking of all I had learned about God and the fact that I was actually His perfect child. The fear and pain left me and I fell asleep. In the morning I awakened completely healed. The evidence of the disease had disappeared overnight. My body became normal in appearance, and I regained weight. Soon I was able to go back to work.

My friends were amazed, and when I happened to meet the last doctor who saw me, he didn't recognize me. This was over fifteen years ago, and I have been in perfect health ever since.

The commentary was as follows:

Your complete recovery, Mr. Bullock, certainly illustrates better than words ever could how transformation of thought brings healing.

You know, friends, from a strictly physical standpoint, there didn't seem to be any hope at all for our guest. But the vital point is that physical evidence never gives the true picture. No matter how physical the disease may seem to be, Christian Science teaches that actually it is induced mentally—and to a great extent by fear. This conclusion is becoming more and more widely acknowledged. The recognition of the mental nature of disease, along with the understanding that God's power corrects whatever is wrong—both mentally and physically—enables one to rely wholeheartedly on spiritual means alone for healing. To put it another way, the remedy lies in correction of thought, and in Christian Science this comes through spiritual awakening.

Recognition of the healing and transforming influence of spiritually enlightened thinking is not something new. It goes back to Bible times. Paul indicated the solution very clearly in these familiar words: "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This means exchanging fear of disease and acceptance of its physical symptoms as real and powerful for the clear recognition that man is God's own image. His life therefore could not actually be subject to disease or discord.

And so we learn through Christian Science that the remedy for all disease is transformation of thought from a material basis to a spiritual standpoint. Man cannot really be at the mercy of conditions that impose suffering. The laws of God, infinite Life, are eternally good. They maintain man's life and enforce harmony. This rules out all discord. When our guest gained, through his study of Science and Health, an understanding of these fundamentals, this brought a basic transformation, or spiritualization of thought, and he was entirely well.

Mr. Bullock's willingness to rely wholeheartedly on God came gradually. He had much fear and hesitation to overcome. But as so many others have found, the more clearly we understand the ever-presence and completeness of God, infinite divine Life, the more natural it becomes to rely entirely on Him for healing. You and I can begin right where we are to let the ever-present Christ, or divine Truth, transform our thinking. Thereby we find healing and maintain harmony.

For example, instead of believing that man is a helpless mortal, his life subject to disease, we can awaken to the spiritual reality that man is the beloved son of God, inseparable from infinite Life. God loves, and protects, and maintains all that He creates at the standpoint of harmony. He imparts only good to His creation.

Instead of accepting the popular belief that there are material laws or conditions that can undermine health and produce suffering, it is well to know that God, divine Life, alone governs man, and that God imparts only health to His creation. You have Bible authority for knowing that God is the only Life there really is and that man expresses that perfect Life without limit or hazard. There is no incurability, no disease, no inaction or over-action, in the everlasting Life that is God. Therefore man is untouched by discord of any kind. Every function of the real man is regulated, governed, and maintained by God alone.

As you accept these spiritual truths concerning your real being which Christian Science teaches, they replace—they wipe out of consciousness—the negative, fearful thoughts that induce disease. Your thought is transformed in proportion as you acknowledge God's supremacy under all circumstances. This enables you to resist the temptation to talk about disease, read about it, look for it, or make dire predictions as to its outcome.

How transformation of thought brings healing is explained by Mary Baker Eddy in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She writes (p. 425): "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew."

The musical selection on this program was Hymn No. 52 from the Christian Science Hymnal.
