Our Sunday Schools: In the Larger Cities

Some of the churches in the larger cities have found that over a period of years the district in which they are located has changed. Many families have left the vicinity, which once was residential, and it has become largely commercial. For the most part the remaining families are living under less desirable conditions than those of former years. Hence, new opportunities are afforded the Sunday School for elevating the race and aiding the establishment of Christ's kingdom on earth. Experience has shown that as the church members come to recognize the opportunities at hand and give regular metaphysical support to the Sunday School, its growth and progress are assured.

Last January a church in one of our largest cities held a special meeting of the membership to consider the possibilities of reaching more of the boys and girls in the vicinity. At the meeting the following experience was related.

"A Negro girl in the Sunday School was troubled with a condition which had been diagnosed by the social department of our city as 'adolescent insanity,' and her mother seemed unable to prevent her from roaming the streets at night. For a time she presented a very difficult discipline problem in the Sunday School, but knowing that the motherhood of God could reach the heart of the child, her teacher was led to talk with her about her true being, pure and un-defiled. The girl was asked not to think of herself as colored, but as the child of God. And the teacher added, 'We love you here!'
