LEANING ON GOD

Those beginning the study of Christian Science are likely to read first the opening sentence of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the volume in which Mary Baker Eddy has recorded her discovery. Here are the comforting lines (p vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Through her long career of founding the Science she discovered, Mrs. Eddy proved the truth of these opening words. In her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 she speaks of the early years of her work when threats came to her through anonymous letters. She says (p. 15), "I leaned on God, and was safe."

Delving more deeply into Science and Health, the student learns how to lean on God scientifically and how to bring into his experience the promised reward of this leaning. Here he finds that God is not the personal creator of a finite material universe, but is infinite Spirit, the creative Principle of a universe of unlimited spiritual ideas. He is one Mind, absolute good, knowing no evil, but eternally conscious of the perfect formations of Spirit which His knowing evolves and sustains.

The beginner finds also that man is a purely spiritual being, the emanation, or idea, of absolute, perfect Mind, and that the mortal which one seems to be is an illusion of the physical senses.
