Early in 1947 I began the study...

Early in 1947 I began the study of Christian Science, and I can truly say that the years since then have been the happiest period of my life. I had left an orthodox church which I joined as a child, because I could not believe in its teachings; yet I was longing for something to fill my spiritual needs. At times I felt very close to God, and my prayers were answered; at other times He seemed the great unknowable.

At a time of great physical and mental distress I fully realized that material possessions cannot bring happiness. An advertisement of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy in our local newspaper stated that Christian Science is the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus. I decided to get this textbook, which was advertised for sale at the local Reading Room. When I went to the Reading Room the attendant spoke to me so lovingly that it was as though a bright light enveloped me, and I felt that I truly walked with God.

I did not understand much of Science and Health at first, and there were prejudices to overcome, but I had an inner conviction that I had at last found the truth for which I had been searching. As the truth gradually unfolded to me and I made small demonstrations of it, I wanted to shout about it from the housetops. This brought opposition from family and friends, and I went through deep waters for a time, but gradually the mists cleared.

As I continued my study I found myself healed of various physical difficulties, one of which specialists had diagnosed as gastroenteritis. It had made me very nervous and underweight, and the simplest foods caused great distress. The specialists said that I would probably be troubled all my life and must stay on a very rigid diet. Thanks to the pearl of great price, Christian Science, I am enjoying better health today than I ever did before.

There have been many outstanding healings in my family simply through impersonal work that I felt impelled to do in times of crisis. My great joy is that members of my family have recognized the beneficent influence of Christian Science and now welcome the literature.

After I had been studying Science about three years, the way unfolded for me to make application for nurses' training at the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast. I had longed to nurse and to be with other Scientists; so this opportunity to progress in such an atmosphere was truly something to be desired. I am indeed grateful for more than four years' service at the Benevolent Association and for the privilege of graduating as a Christian Science nurse. During my service there I did not lose one hour because of illness. Sometimes, like Jacob, I wrestled all night with a discordant condition, but when the time came to go on duty I was enabled to do so. Often I obtained complete freedom shortly afterward. I have learned that God's laws are available to all, as He is no respecter of persons.

For membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and for the priceless privilege of class instruction, I am very grateful.— (Mrs.) Alice L. Edwards, Canton, Ohio.
