WHICH STANDPOINT ARE WE ACCEPTING?
Judging from the standpoint of personal sense, the greater part of mankind believes that the universe, including man, is material, subject to discord and decay. However, Christ Jesus, judging from God's standpoint, demonstrated that the real is spiritual, eternal, and perfect. He said (John: 24), "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." His disciples caught glimpses of the spiritual reality, but the majority of the people did not, for their standpoint and his were diametrically opposite.
In the latter part of the nineteenth century a deeply religious woman from New England revealed again to humanity the same reality that Jesus had beheld. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, declares uncompromisingly in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 182): "We cannot obey both physiology and Spirit, for one absolutely destroys the other, and one or the other must be supreme in the affections. It is impossible to work from two standpoints. If we attempt it, we shall presently 'hold to the one, and despise the other.'"
Both standpoints cannot be true, for they are utterly opposite. Jesus indicated which one is true. He said (John 8:15, 16): "Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me." Only the standpoint of Spirit is true, because Spirit, God, is Truth.
