CONTINUING IN THE TRUTH

In quoting Jesus' statement (John 8:31, 32), "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," we are apt to think only of the reward and to lose sight of the diligent work which has to be done in order to obtain that reward. But the use of the word "if" at the beginning of the citation makes it plain that there is a condition to be met before we can expect to reap the reward. The condition is that we must continue in the truth. Remaining constant in our search of the Scriptures and of Mary Baker Eddy's writings ensures our finding the truth.

The prophet Jeremiah tells us (29:13), "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." To search means to inquire after, to seek for. Some men spend their lives in dreary places searching for hidden treasure which they believe is there and which will make them rich. Should we not search even more diligently for the greatest treasure obtainable, the pearl of great price, which is Christian Science? But like the merchant who sold all that he had to obtain the pearl, we must dispose of our material beliefs in order that we may obtain this priceless pearl.

Certain rewards or prizes are often given for working out some puzzle or for writing some essay. In each case effort is required to finish the task and to qualify us for the reward. So it is in our search for Truth.
