Their Librarians Are Doing an Important Work

[Note: Extracts from reports prepared for the Reading Room Division by several librarians]

Wellesley, Massachusetts

We wish to share with you a lovely experience. As you know, in 1954 Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fell on Friday. That is the night our Reading Room is advertised as remaining open until nine o'clock. It was questioned whether we should remain open on these holiday evenings when most stores in the business district were closing early.

One of our regular night attendants volunteered to serve both of these nights. On his way to the Reading Room on New Year's Eve the argument came to him that perhaps it might have been wiser to close the room that evening. He quickly reversed this thought and declared that he was willing to abide by all the rules and established precedents governing our Reading Rooms.
