"THOU SHALT NOT COVET"
We are told in the Bible "that God is no respecter of persons" (Acts 10:34). He richly endows every one of His children with all good. He does not give to one and forget or neglect another. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, declares in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 13), "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals." Thus since all are constantly receiving good in infinite measure from God, who is infinite good, there is no reason for jealousy, envy, or covetousness.
"Covet," according to a definition given in a dictionary, is "to desire; to long for, esp. something belonging to another person." A student of Christian Science was spending some time in a large city on the West Coast of the United States. She found herself watching each day with keen interest pedestrians—men, women, and children—climbing the steep hills of that region with dexterity and ease. A longing took possession of her thinking, and she found herself declaring, "How I should like to do that!"
Later she diagnosed this as covetousness. She realized that there was no reason or cause for it. Had not God given her, as well as others, strength, ability, alacrity, and dominion? She saw that whatever true activity others expressed or possessed came from the infinite divine source of all activity and was hers too now and forever even as it was theirs.
