STILLNESS AND SAFETY

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Have you ever stood very still and heard the song of a bird or cricket which you probably would not have heard if you had been running about noisily? Right now, if you were to be very still and listen, you probably would hear many interesting and unusual sounds.

In Exodus, the second book of the Bible, we are told that for many years Moses tended sheep in the desert wilderness. In this open stretch of earth and sky he learned to value stillness and to listen for the voice of God, ever-present divine Mind.

Years of quiet listening enabled Moses to hear God's voice when He commanded him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, where they had been held in darkness and slavery. At first he was tempted to believe that he could not do what God had told him to do. Later, Moses found that when he became still enough to hear God's voice he was shown how to obey it.
