"THE PRIVILEGE AND DUTY"

Under the heading "Discipline" in the Manual of The Mother Church, our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in part (Art. VIII, Sect. 14), "It shall be the privilege and duty of every member, who can afford it, to subscribe for the periodicals which are the organs of this Church." Here it is quite clear that our Leader intended every member to be fully aware of the importance of subscribing for the literature. It is also clear that she saw that active obedience to this ruling would provide a means of spreading the healing mission of Christian Science throughout the world.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy gives the complete revelation of Truth, which is fully supported by her other writings. Our Leader's writings are designed to awaken, illumine, and inspire thought and to lead the individual to practical proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science healing. We can readily accept, with gratitude, the fact that this loving provision for our literature was planned solely to bless mankind.

Lack is one of the most subtle arguments which would prevent us from subscribing for the Christian Science literature. It comes as the suggestion of lack of time, money, desire, and opportunity. We can be comforted by understanding that Mrs. Eddy well knew what it meant to meet suggestions of lack and limitation in all its guises. How grateful we are that she mastered these and that through her writings and teachings she has shown us how to overcome every finite belief.
