Many years ago, when I knew...

Many years ago, when I knew nothing of Christian Science, I was employed in an office by a woman who was a Christian Scientist. For some time I had been troubled with a distressing throat condition which caused me much discomfort and embarrassment. Finally a large growth formed, which I kept covered with a bandage.

When I had been at the office just a few weeks, my mother took me to a surgeon. Upon examination he said that an operation within a few days would be imperative. Full of fear and discouragement, I related the verdict to my employer the next day; whereupon she made this statement which I shall never forget: "Don't you know we are told in the Bible that God made man in the image and likeness of Himself, and that He saw everything He had made, and that it was very good? Since He has already made you perfect, does anything need to be taken away from you, and does God's work need to be improved upon?"

Those words conveyed so much hope and assurance to me that when she asked whether I would like her to give me a treatment I gladly consented. She told me to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, at every opportunity I had during the day. Then she went away to pray for me.
